Kidney Foundation of Canada receives grant from Waste Management Trust Fund

Environment Minister Bob Mercer and Gordon Seabright, chairman of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), announced today a $4,671 grant for the Newfoundland and Labrador Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada from the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.

The Foundation will use funds from the Trust Fund to implement and promote the Kidney Car Program. This is a vehicle donation program which encourages the general public to donate unwanted vehicles to the Kidney Foundation. Donors receive free towing service and a tax receipt for their donation. Through this program, many abandoned vehicles will be collected throughout the St. Johns Metropolitan area.

"I congratulate the Kidney Foundation for taking this initiative to rid the environment of these unsightly car wrecks," said Minister Mercer. "I encourage all residents, municipalities and businesses to take advantage of this service."

Since the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund was established in 1999, government has approved 284 applications and approximately $8 million in contributions. This funding has been disbursed to 300 schools, more than 160 municipalities, 45 environmental and community groups, and several businesses, school districts and waste management authorities.

"This is a very interesting project that has both environmental and financial benefits," said Mr. Seabright. "Clean-ups such as this one are a great example of what can be accomplished when charity organizations, businesses and citizens take pride in their communities and their environment."

MMSB is a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is responsible for the Beverage Container and Used Tire Recycling Programs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund, and public education and awareness regarding the Used Oil Recycling Program and the Provincial Waste Management Strategy.
