Waste Management Trust Fund grant awarded to the Town of Humber Arm South

Environment Minister Bob Mercer and Gordon Seabright, chair of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), are pleased to announce the Town of Humber Arm South will receive funding from the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund to conduct a community clean up.

Funding from the Trust Fund will help the Town in its efforts to turn a closed out dump site into a day park. Ten years ago the dump site was closed and the Town started the transformation. The total funding will be confirmed once the tender to hire an excavator for the clean up has been awarded.

"A key goal of the Newfoundland and Labrador Solid Waste Management Strategy is to reduce the number of landfill sites," said Minister Mercer. "I commend the Town of Humber Arm South for its effort to clean up its former landfill site and transform it into a day park."

Since the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund was established in 1999, government has approved 284 applications and approximately $8 million in contributions. This funding has been disbursed to 300 schools, more than 160 municipalities, 45 environmental and community groups, and several businesses, school districts, and waste management authorities.

"I am delighted that this community can benefit from the Waste Management Trust Fund. Clean ups such as this one are a great example of what can be accomplished when citizens take pride in their community and their environment," said Mr. Seabright.

"I am very pleased with this funding as it is a continued commitment from the government to restore this site and turn it into a tourist attraction," said Eddie Joyce, MHA for the Bay of Islands. "This project is a prime example of how we can make a difference with the council and Department of Environment working together. I am proud to be a part of this project."

MMSB is a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement, and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is responsible for the Beverage Container and Used Tire Recycling Programs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund, and the public education and awareness of the Used Oil Recycling Program and the Provincial Waste Management Strategy.
