Minister announces new appointments to Multi-Materials Stewardship Board

Environment Minister Bob Mercer announced today four new appointments to the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB). Minister Mercer also reappointed three current board members. These appointments are for a three-year term.

"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to addressing waste management issues facing the province," said Minister Mercer. "Our plan became clear when we released last year the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Strategy. The implementation of this strategy involves the cooperation of many agencies and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board plays a key role in our efforts to promote and develop waste management and waste diversion initiatives."

The four new appointees are: Derm Flynn of Appleton; Don Hann of Port aux Basques; Catherine Barrett of St. Johns; and Dr. Bassim Eid, representing the Newfoundland Environmental Industries Association (NEIA). Mr. Flynn and Ms. Barrett participated in the 2001 province-wide consultation on waste management which resulted in critical input to the provinces waste management strategy. Mr. Hann brings forward the views of the southwest Newfoundland rural communities while Dr. Eids appointment means NEIA will have a representative on the board following an absence of several years.

"The newly-appointed board members will bring additional expertise to the MMSB," said Minister Mercer. "The new appointments also broaden the geographical representation of the board."

The current board members who were reappointed for a three-year term are: Sheldon Peddle of Corner Brook; Edward Delaney of Bay Roberts; and John Patten of St. Johns, distributors representative. Other board members include: Gordon Seabright, chairman; Paul Dean, deputy minister, Department of Environment; Madelyn Kelly, Labrador representative; Don Stuckless, consumers representative; and Randy Simms, Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities.

"I look forward to working with the board members of MMSB as it continues to develop and implement waste management programs on behalf of the government," said Minister Mercer.

MMSB is a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement, and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is responsible for the Beverage Container and Used Tire Recycling Programs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, education and support for the Used Oil Recycling Program and the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.
