St. Johns Clean and Beautiful receives Waste Management Trust Fund grant

Environment Minister Bob Mercer and Gordon Seabright, chair of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), are pleased to announce that St. Johns Clean and Beautiful has received funding for its annual Spring clean-up campaign taking place May 15 to June 15.

The committee will receive a grant for $10,000 in support of their five-week Take Pride...Take Action! Spring clean-up campaign. Take Pride...Take Action! encourages neighbourhoods, community groups, schools, businesses, individuals, environmental organizations, and any other group to participate by picking an area in the city and making it clean. It is anticipated that this year at least 80 cleanups will take place, 7,000 volunteers will participate, and approximately 70 tonnes of litter and debris will be collected.

"It is very encouraging to see an organization like St. Johns Clean and Beautiful take a strong role in cleaning up the City of St. Johns. This annual cleanup campaign will not only have an effect on the residents of St. Johns, but also people visiting the city," said Minister Mercer.

Since the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund was established in 1999, government has approved 278 applications and approximately $8 million in contributions. This funding has been disbursed to 300 schools, more than 155 municipalities, 45 environmental and community groups, and several businesses and school districts.

"The spring clean-up campaign has many benefits including improving the environment and fostering pride in ones community and property," said Mr. Seabright. "This project will increase public awareness and contribute to a cleaner environment."

"In my district of St. Johns Centre, neighbourhood groups in the Buckmasters Circle and Froude Avenue areas have already worked hard to beautify those communities," said MHA Joan Marie Aylward. "This campaign will surely encourage others to emulate their efforts."

MMSB is a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement, and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is responsible for the Beverage Container and Used Tire Recycling Programs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund, and the public education and awareness of the Used Oil Recycling Program and the Provincial Waste Management Strategy.
