Waste Management Trust Fund grant awarded to Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove

Environment Minister Bob Mercer and Gordon Seabright, chairman of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), are pleased to announce the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove- Outer Cove has received a grant of $10,000 from the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.

Funding from the Trust Fund will allow the town to complete phase one of a three-phase program to clean up many areas of the town and develop these areas as recreational places for residents and visitors. This phase includes the clean up of Outer Cove Beach and Savage Creek. The beach is presently obstructed by ruins of an old concrete slipway and highway bridge.

"This area of the town is popular for residents and is visited by a large number of tourists," said Minister Mercer. "I commend the town for taking the leadership role to rid its community of unsightly debris. This province is known for its natural beauty and by working together we can ensure our wonderful landscapes are appreciated."

Since the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund was established in 1999, government has approved 278 applications and approximately $8 million in contributions. This funding has been disbursed to 300 schools, more than 155 municipalities, 45 environmental and community groups, and several businesses and school districts.

"This clean up project will significantly contribute to the cleanliness of the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove," said Mr. Seabright. "I am delighted that this community can benefit from the Waste Management Trust Fund. Clean ups such as this one are a great example of what can be accomplished when citizens take pride in their community and their environment."

MMSB is a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement, and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is responsible for the Beverage Container and Used Tire Recycling Programs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund, and the public education and awareness of the Used Oil Recycling Program and the Provincial Waste Management Strategy.
