Residents encouraged to attend wood burning workshop

Residents of eastern Newfoundland are encouraged to attend a workshop to learn how to burn wood more cleanly, safely and efficiently, plus get the most out of their wood burning appliances. Workshops are scheduled for St. Johns, Conception Bay South, Harbour Grace, Placentia and Clarenville. Similar workshops had previously been held in other parts of the province.

Through the Newfoundland and Labrador Burn It Smart program, a wood combustion workshop series is being organized by the Atlantic Chapter of the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association of Canada (HPBAC) with support from the provincial departments of Environment, and Health and Community Services, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association, the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and the Wood Energy Technical Transfer (WETT), a non-profit organization.

This free educational campaign will be directed towards consumers and people who have a professional interest in residential wood burning (fire prevention, insurance, contractors, building inspectors, retailers).

The following topics will be covered in the workshop:
Advances in wood burning appliances that result in safer and more efficient wood burning.
The proper installation and maintenance of wood burning appliances.
The professional training and certification programs available to professionals with an interest in
             residential wood combustion.
Cutting, seasoning and burning tips for getting the most heat from wood burning.
The improvement in air quality resulting from the use of advanced technology appliances.
