Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Bob Mercer has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Bay D�Espoir (Crown) 5 Yr. Operating Plan (District 7)
Proponent: Newfoundland Forest Service

The proponent, Newfoundland Forest Service, has registered the Five Year Operating Plan for Forest Management District 7 (Bay D'Espoir). The undertaking will consist of timber harvesting, road construction, silviculture and ecosystem management activities. This undertaking is necessary to allow harvesting of mature softwood and hardwood stands, construction of primary access roads and carry out various silviculture and ecosystem management activities to sustain other resource values. Existing Crown commercial operators and domestic users will, by authority of the proponent under the Forestry Act and Regulations, be permitted to carry out all relevant forest management activities. Forest Management District 7 covers an area of approximately 1,200,000 hectares. The undertaking was registered on March 6, 2003; public comments are due April 10, 2003; and the minister's decision is due April 20, 2003.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
