Education Minister opens new school in Lawn

Education Minister John Ottenheimer joined Joseph Keating, chair of the Burin Peninsula School Board and Barry Roberts, director, for the opening of the new school in Lawn today.

"I am delighted to be in Lawn to participate in the grand opening of this wonderful new facility," said Minister Ottenheimer. "Our children represent our future, and schools represent our highest aspirations. This new school will provide for our children a place to learn, to socialize and to achieve their true potential."

The new K-12 school, which was approved in April 2001, is 22 000 square feet and has a current enrolment of approximately 170 students. It contains a gymnasium, a technology education suite, a science lab, family resource centre, a challenging needs suite and guidance suite. All classrooms have been wired for computers and the school is fitted with a mechanical ventilation system.

The minister noted that it was through dedicated partnerships that this project came to fruition. "I commend everyone involved including the community, the school district and previous Minister of Education, Judy Foote, for their unceasing efforts to secure a new school to service the students of Lawn and surrounding areas."
