World Teachers Day

In 1994, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated October 5 World Teachers Day. It is a day set aside for over 100 nations to formally recognize the value of teachers, not only for their students, but for society at large. Education Minister Gerry Reid encourages all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to take time on Sunday, and reflect on the critical importance of teachers in all our lives.

"Each year, teachers from across this province are recognized at both national and international levels for their dedication, ingenuity and professionalism," Minister Reid said. "However, there are thousands of teachers across Newfoundland and Labrador who, every day, go into their classrooms and change the lives of their students, one student at a time. Today, I take the opportunity to thank each and every one of them."

This years theme for World Teachers Day is Teachers - opening doors to a better world. This slogan highlights the role teachers play in creating a better future. By encouraging students to learn, to think for themselves and to set goals, they are laying the foundation for a better tomorrow. They are showing their students that they can make a difference, that there is a world of opportunity in education and that no door has to be closed to them.

"As a former teacher, I know the challenges teachers face as they try to motivate, inspire and educate the students in their charge," Minister Reid noted. "Sometimes, it is not an easy task. On behalf of every person in this province, who were all once students themselves, I applaud all the teachers whose diligence and determination has created an education system we can be proud of."
