Learning Disabilities Association receives funding

On the evening of June 24, 2003, Education Minister Gerry Reid and a host of other local personalities participated in the Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labradors (LDANL) Blind Date with a Star.

As part of governments commitment to this important charity and unique fund-raising event, Premier Roger Grimes agreed to match funds raised during the evening. This years event was a huge success, and Minister Reid had the pleasure of recently presenting a $50,000 cheque to the Learning Disabilities Association.

"The LDANL does remarkable work for all people in this province diagnosed with a learning disability, not just the students," said Minister Reid. "We are delighted to be able to provide this funding so they are better able to continue to advocate for and support those diagnosed with a learning disability and their families."

Individuals with learning disabilities have average to above average intelligence. Learning disabilities, often called the invisible disability, affect 10-15 per cent of the population. An average school classroom of thirty students will likely include four children with learning disabilities.

"This money will help us to better serve the families in our province," said Patsy Whitten, executive director of LDANL. "We will be working to provide them with an opportunity to find out about new technology available, and it will enable us to train individuals in the use of this technology in order to help them compensate for their difficulties in the classroom. Assistive Technology can increase self-reliance. Many times, students who struggle in school depend on parents, siblings, friends and teachers for help with their assignments. By using technology, these same students are able to be more independent and successful in school."

"Thirty-five per cent of students with a learning disability drop out of high school," noted the minister. "If this funding allows just one student to graduate from high school, then it is money well spent."
