International Adult Learners Week

Gerry Reid, Minister of Education, and Anna Thistle, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, are pleased to join with all Canadians in celebrating the pan-Canadian launch of International Adult Learners Week, September 7-13, 2003. Sponsored by the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Adult Learners Week seeks to raise the profile and promote adult learning throughout life with the goal of increasing the number of adults engaged in learning activities.

Since this year also marks the launch of the United Nations Decade for Literacy (2003-2012), special emphasis is being placed on the importance of adult literacy. "Adult Learners Week is especially significant this year as we are launching a two-year Adult Basic Education Level I pilot project," said Minister Reid. "This pilot, which will be led and monitored by the Literacy Branch, Department of Education, will take place in nine sites throughout the province. An undertaking of this magnitude has never taken place before in Newfoundland and Labrador. It firmly demonstrates this governments continued commitment to improving provincial literacy levels. All adult students in this province are to be commended for the initiative they show in working toward attaining their educational goals."

Minister Thistle concurred. "As a government, we are committed to promoting lifelong learning opportunities and to increasing the number of adults who avail of them. This is the second year that Canada has participated in International Adult Learners Week and we are pleased to be a part of this event. We urge everyone to join us in celebrating this very important week."

International Adult Learners Week is being launched nationally on September 4 at the National Library of Canada in Ottawa, and will be broadcast on Rogers television and live on the World Wide Web at www.adultlearning.unesco.ca Newfoundland and Labrador will be represented at the launch by Ms. Tanya Goosney, co-ordinator of the AlphaPlus Centre in Deer Lake, and an adult learner.
