Supplementary exams to be held this summer

The Department of Education has announced that there will be a supplementary examination this year in both Thematic Literature 3201 and Mathematics 3204. The examinations will be administered August 22, 2003, and the results will be available to Memorial University, the College of the North Atlantic and other post-secondary institutions in time for Fall 2003 admissions.

"We are offering these supplementary examinations in an effort to ensure that more students are able to begin post-secondary studies in the fall," said Minister Reid. "Traditionally, supplementary exams for these courses are offered in November along with supplementary examinations for other high school public examination courses. By offering these two exams in August, however, we allow students to take advantage of time during the summer to prepare, while ensuring access to post-secondary institutions for the fall. Both of these courses are prerequisites for many educational institutions, and our goal is to enable as many students as possible to begin post-secondary studies in the fall of this year."

Minister Reid noted that these exams will also be available in the regular November offering of supplementary examinations.

Guidelines for public examination protocol will be strictly followed for the August sitting of these exams. Registration for the supplementary examinations is the responsibility of the student and/or parent. Students may obtain an application form from their school principal or on the Departments website at www.gov.nl.ca/edu . The deadline for registration is August 8, 2003. Students requiring more information on the August supplementary examinations should contact their principal prior to the end of the school year. The location of the exam centres will be announced once the school districts have them identified.
