Early Childhood Literacy Grants Announced

Education Minister Gerry Reid is pleased to announce the recent approval of more than $175,000 in grants for early childhood literacy/family literacy programs from the Department of Education. This funding has been made available through the provinces Stepping into the Future early childhood development initiative.

"Prevention and early intervention are major themes of Words to Live By, our provincial Strategic Literacy Plan," said Minister Reid. "When combined with early childhood literacy grants provided last August, this funding represents a total investment of more than a quarter of a million dollars in community-based early literacy activities targeting children up to age six in 2002-03. The recipients of this funding have developed initiatives which fit very well with our long-term strategy of raising literacy levels in Newfoundland and Labrador. I commend these organizations for their commitment to our children."

Twenty-eight proposals from non-profit community-based organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador were recommended by the Strategic Literacy Funding Committee, in accordance with priorities stated in the 2003-04 Grants Application Package. The list of approved projects follows.
