NLIS 15 March 27, 2003 (Education) $1.8 million announced for Community Access Program Government is continuing funding for the Community Access Program (CAP), with new funding of $1.8 million in Budget 2003. This program is carried out in partnership with the federal government. "The Community Access Program is very successful and benefits more than 96 communities around the province," said Gerry Reid, Minister of Education. "This program puts computers into schools, libraries and community facilities, providing free Internet access to all residents in these communities. Given the success of the program and its value to our rural communities, government will continue to support the CAP program, with an investment of $1.8 million this year." The Community Access Program, which commenced in 1995, is a component of Industry Canadas Connecting Canadians strategy, the goal of which is to provide affordable Internet access, and the skills to use it effectively, through the establishment of public Internet access sites, commonly known as CAP sites. "This funding can also be used to purchase equipment and computer software, and will allow for extended hours of operation at CAP sites, which will benefit users of the sites," added the minister.
