$2.5 million allocated to address support staff services in school system

In Budget 2003, government is allocating $2.5 million towards phasing in the implementation of recommendations in the Warren Report respecting secretarial and janitorial/maintenance staff services in the school system. The implementation of these recommendations will start on September 1, 2003.

Following the 2001 support workers strike, government and the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) signed an agreement to establish a study group to examine the hours of work for secretaries and janitorial/maintenance employees. Dr. Phil Warren, chair of the panel, completed and tabled with the Department of Education his report Facing the Challenge. Included in the report were recommendations on secretarial and janitorial/maintenance workers.

"This government recognizes and values the role of support staff in our education system," said Gerry Reid, Minister of Education. "Our school system could not operate without our secretaries, and janitorial and maintenance staff, and I am pleased that we will contribute $2.5 million this year to address the needs of these workers."

The long-term investment in secretarial and janitorial/maintenance staff will enable the administration and operation of our school buildings to dramatically improve.
