Government continues to invest in school capital construction, maintenance and repairs

Government remains committed to investing in our educational infrastructure, with Budget 2003 funding of $6.8 million towards capital construction projects and school maintenance and repairs.

"When education reform occurred in 1997, government committed to investing in new construction and renovations which would be required as a result of consolidation," said Gerry Reid, Minister of Education. "We have lived up to that commitment, and this year we are allocating $3.3 million for capital construction, and $3.5 million for a contingency fund for school maintenance and repairs. This funding reflects our goal of ensuring that our children attend quality and safe educational institutions."

With this funding, government has invested a total of $176.8 million in school construction and renovations since education reform, representing the largest capital program for schools in our provinces history.

"We have built 23 new schools and completed major renovations on 49 existing properties," added the minister. "I have visited some of these schools and am very impressed with the work we have completed to date. Our students deserve state-of-the-art facilities and the best possible educational experience. Monies reinvested into our infrastructure represent a sound investment in the future of our children."
