Minister celebrates Education Week 2003

From March 2-8, the province will celebrate Education Week 2003. Gerry Reid, Minister of Education, was at G.C. Rowe Junior High in Corner Brook this morning to participate in the official opening ceremonies.

"Education Week is a time when we reflect on the importance of learning and the value of education, which is the foundation for success," said Minister Reid. "With a quality education, we acquire essential life skills, the power of knowledge and most importantly, the freedom and ability to determine our future."

This years theme for Education Week is Many Places, Many Faces, One Spirit.

"Our students today are our leaders tomorrow, and we must take seriously our responsibility to provide the best possible educational opportunities," added Minister Reid. "This is vital to their future success and to the future success of this province. This government has a heart for education, and it is certainly one of our top priorities. We will continue to invest heavily in the system, from pre-school right through to post-secondary, to ensure that our children have the best education so that they may be equal competitors in the global village."

Minister Reid joined Winston Carter, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association, and the students and staff at G.C. Rowe Junior High in celebrating the value and importance of learning. The ceremonies were simultaneously Web cast to schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Performing at the opening ceremonies were music and drama students from G.C. Rowe, Humber Elementary and Herdman Collegiate.
