Tender awarded for Holy Trinity High extension

Education Minister Gerry Reid announced today the construction contract for the extension to Holy Trinity High School in Torbay has been awarded to Marco Services Ltd., of St. Johns.

"This is the second phase of this project which will see government invest a total of $2,649,300 in the future of the students in the Torbay area," said Minister Reid. "When this project is complete, Holy Trinity High will be a school of which the students, teachers, parents and the entire community can be proud."

The extension to Holy Trinity High will see approximately 20,600 square feet added to the school to provide 15 new classrooms, a new science lab, a challenging needs suite and a music room. In addition to the extension, renovations to the existing building will be carried out to add a library/resource centre, a technology education suite and a second challenging needs suite.

Funding to complete the capital upgrades to Holy Trinity was included in the $15 million the provincial government allocated to the Avalon East School Board in December, 1998, for capital projects within the district. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2004.

"This comprises part of government's $170 million investment in new school facilities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This government's commitment to improve the learning environments of students is unprecedented," said Minister Reid.

The minister noted that, since education reform, government has allocated more than $38 million to the Avalon East School Board for new construction, re-developments, and renovations to ensure students and teachers have modern, state-of-the-art facilities in which to learn and work.
