APEGN donates engineering and geoscience history book to schools

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland (APEGN) has donated copies of the book, Challenge and Change: An Illustrated History of Engineering and Geoscience in Newfoundland and Labrador, to school libraries in the province. Education Minister Judy Foote accepted the books today from Karen Thomas, P.Eng., APEGN president, and author Donald Tarrant, P.Eng.

"The history book was commissioned by APEGN to mark our 50th anniversary," said Ms. Thomas. "It reflects the economic and technological development of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1952 to 2002 and is a very useful resource for school children.

Ms. Thomas said the book also highlights the significant contributions and achievements of provincial engineers and geoscientists to the province in all sectors of the economy.

In accepting the books on behalf of the provinces schools, Minister Foote thanked the APEGN for making this valuable resource available.

"This book is an excellent reference for both students and teachers," said Minister Foote. "It includes a wide range of engineering accomplishments in this province from communications to electricity production to the oil and gas sector. By tracing these accomplishments, the book also speaks to the history of Newfoundland and Labrador."

The soft cover book is published by APEGN and printed by Robinson-Blackmore. It is illustrated with black and white photos, and retails for $22.95 (plus tax).

Fifty years ago, in June 1952, there were 27 charter members of the association at the first annual meeting held in St. Johns. Today, there are more than 2, 200 professional engineers and geoscientists licensed to practice in this province.

A self-regulating professional association, APEGN exists so that there is competent and ethical practice of engineering and geoscience in Newfoundland and Labrador and to ensure public confidence in the professions. The association receives its authority from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador through the Engineers and Geoscientists Act.
