New College Board of Governors announced

Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, today announced eight new appointments and six re-appointments to the College of the North Atlantic Board of Governors to join the existing members of the board. The appointments are effective October 25.

"The appointees to the College of the North Atlantic Board of Governors bring a wealth of experience to their new and continued responsibility," said Minister Kelly. "I look forward to working with the board in their continuing efforts to further develop the college while ensuring accountability."

The board comprises representation from the education community, the business community, the general public, the student population and college faculty and staff. Individuals are selected based on their background, expertise and interest in community involvement.

The College of the North Atlantic is the only public college in Newfoundland and Labrador with 17 campus locations throughout the province. The college is committed to ensuring the delivery of quality programs to meet the existing and emerging needs of today's labour market. The focus of the College of the North Atlantic goes beyond the traditional approaches to education and training and serves students of all ages and interests through full and part-time programs.

Backgrounder

SUSAN ADAMS - is a resident of St. John�s and works as a financial consultant with accounting firms such as KPMG. She is a chartered accountant and has bachelor of science and bachelor of education degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her community service includes work with the Women's Enterprise Bureau, Planned Parenthood, the Joseph R. Smallwood Heritage Foundation and the Grand Bank Main Street Youth Centre.

GUNTHER BAUMGARTNER - is a resident of Come by Chance where he is the president and refinery manager of North Atlantic Refining, Ltd.. He holds a degree in chemical engineering from the University of New Mexico and has worked in the oil industry for more than 20 years. He has recently been appointed to the Energy and International - Sectoral Advisory Group in International Trade. In 2001 he was named one of Atlantic Canada�s top chief executive officers by Atlantic Business magazine.

JULIET CROSBIE - is a resident of St. John�s and the manager of human resources with Newfoundland Power. She has 20 years of experience in the electrical utility industry, and holds a bachelor of commerce (honours) from Memorial University of Newfoundland. She is also a graduate of the Executive Development Program from Memorial University and of the Advanced Human Resources Management Program from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA.

EDWARD DELANEY - is a resident of Bay Roberts and a former educator. He worked as a school teacher and principal before becoming a school board administrator. He holds a bachelor of arts, a bachelor of arts (education) and a m,sters in education (administration) from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

JOANNE HUSSEY - is a resident of Clarenville and is a project manager and researcher with the Gander Women�s Centre. She holds a bachelor of arts (honours) from Mount Allison University, and a master of arts (gender studies) from the University of Leeds.

DAVID LEWIS - is a resident of Gander and the current CEO of the Central East Health Care Institutions Board. He has worked in health care administration for 30 years and has served on several health care-related boards and committees throughout the province. He holds a bachelor of arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland and has completed a Hospital Administration Program at the University of Toronto.

JENNY LYALL - is a resident of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the current program director for the Aboriginal Family Centre. She holds a bachelor of education degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and has worked as a K-12 educator and adult literacy instructor.

ALAN MACKINNON - is a resident of St. John�s where he is the office leader for Deloitte & Touche and is responsible for the financial and special services group for the Atlantic practice. He is a graduate of St. Mary�s University with bachelor of arts and bachelor of commerce degrees. He is fellow of the Newfoundland Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals.

DR. AUDREY MANNING - is a resident of Lumsden where she works as a consultant. She graduated from the Salvation Army Grace Hospital as a nurse and later earned baccalaureate degrees in philosophy, social development studies and religious studies. She also holds master of science (human services) and a doctor of philosophy. She is an active community volunteer and a published poet and writer.

GARY REARDON - is a resident of St. John�s and the current president and managing director for Reardon Construction and Development Ltd. and Reardon Realty Services Inc. He has served as president of the St. John�s Board of Trade. He is a graduate civil engineering technologist with over 30 years in the construction industry and holds a masters certificate in project management from York University in cooperation with Memorial University.

STANLEY SPARKES - is a resident of Glovertown and a former educator who has taught and served as an administrator in the secondary school system in the province. He has a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of arts (education) from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has been an active volunteer in Glovertown.

MICHAEL TOBIN - is a resident of Stephenville and an educator at both the secondary and post-secondary system in the province. He holds a bachelor of arts (education) degree from Memorial University. He has served on many school-related boards and committees throughout the province.

MARILYN TUCKER - is a resident of St. John�s and the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers Council, a position held since 1996. She holds a bachelor of commerce degree and is a Certified Management Accountant. She has served on various chambers of commerce throughout the province.

LEONARD WINSOR - is a resident of Grand Falls-Windsor where he works as a real estate advisor and is the owner/operator of DEW Enterprises Ltd. Appraisers and Consultants. He has served as a member of the Newfoundland Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada Inc., as well as president of the Exploits Regional Chamber of Commerce.
