Two projects on Great Northern Peninsula funded

Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) on behalf of Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC), along with Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced funding totaling $91,972 for two projects on the Great Northern Peninsula.

The Straits Development Association will receive $53,136 to construct an extension to the Seal Skin Tannery. The project will provide work experience for seven people for 12 weeks.

The White Bay Central Development Association will receive $38,836 to upgrade and construct walking trails and picnic areas in Croque along the French Shore Walking Trail. Seven individuals will receive employment on the 12-week project.

"I am very pleased to announce this funding to the communities on the Great Northern Peninsula," said Minister Byrne. "It is important that we build up our community in order to effectively stimulate economic development for the area. The funding for these projects will continue to contribute to the areas overall potential."

"These projects have the dual benefit of enhancing economic opportunities, improving local tourism infrastructure as well as providing training to individuals which will help them in their efforts to secure ongoing employment," said Minister Kelly.

The projects are being supported under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement, through funding provided by the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program component. JCPs bring together local partners to create employment opportunities by linking the needs of unemployed individuals with local business initiatives and economic development. To be eligible, companies must demonstrate that the work experience provided to unemployed individuals is incremental to their normal operations and can lead to long-term employment as well as help communities build their economies.

The measures are funded, in whole or in part, by the Government of Canada from the Employment Insurance (EI) account. To be eligible, participants must have established a claim for EI benefits; or have had their EI benefit period ended within the last three years; or have established a claim for EI maternity or parental benefits within the past five years and are re-entering the labour force after having left it to care for newborn or newly-adopted children. Other criteria may apply.
