Federal and provincial governments fund projects with
two Chambers of Commerce on Northern Peninsula

Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, on behalf of Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC), along with Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced Job Creation Partnerships funding of $60,076 for two projects on the Great Northern Peninsula.

The St. Anthony and Area Chamber of Commerce will receive $29,100 to hire a coordinator to work for one year on several initiatives involving local business development.

The Straits-St. Barbe Chamber of Commerce will receive $30,976 to hire a coordinator to carry out several projects over the next 12 months including development of a business directory and planning an annual conference/trade show.

"Thanks to the combined efforts of the Government of Canada and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, these projects will foster a positive climate of growth for business in several communities throughout my constituency," said Minister Byrne. "The coordinator positions will help enhance the networking opportunities available within the business community."

"These projects will go a long way towards improving community infrastructure as well as encouraging new entrepreneurial development," said Minister Kelly. "Overall, the projects will help create an environment that is conducive to investment in the local economy."

The projects with both Chambers of Commerce are being supported under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement, through funding provided by the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) component. JCPs brings together local partners to create employment opportunities by linking the needs of unemployed individuals with local business initiatives and economic development. To be eligible, companies must demonstrate that the work experience provided to unemployed individuals is incremental to their normal operations and can lead to long-term employment as well as help communities build their economies.

The measures are funded, in whole or in part, by the Government of Canada from the Employment Insurance (EI) account. To be eligible, participants must have established a claim for EI benefits; or have had their EI benefit period ended within the last three years; or have established a claim for EI maternity or parental benefits within the past five years and are re-entering the labour force after having left it to care for newborn or newly-adopted children. Other criteria may apply.
