Federal and provincial governments fund six projects on Northern Peninsula

Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), on behalf of Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC), along with Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced funding totaling $126,121 for six projects on the Northern Peninsula.

The Harbour Authority of Port Saunders will receive $11,464 to hire four workers to complete the renovations to the Harbour Authority building. The eight-week project will involve carpentry, electrical, painting and plumbing work to modernize the facility.

The Granite Coffee House in Woody Point will receive $11,464 to hire four persons for eight weeks to carry out various repairs and renovations to the building with the aim of making it more attractive to customers.

Middle Brook Cabins Limited in Glenburnie will receive $8,744 to hire three persons for eight weeks. Activities will include landscaping, constructing horseshoe pitch and fire pit as well as cleaning up the walking trail near Middle Brook Falls.

JAD Farms Inc. of Sallys Cove will receive $6,120 to hire two persons for nine weeks to build a storage shed, clear six acres and plant 10,000 strawberry plants.

The Nurse Myra Bennett Foundation of Daniels Harbour will receive $9,115 to hire a person for 18 weeks to carry out a variety of heritage related activities in accordance with the groups business plan.

The Town of Woody Point will receive $79,214 to hire seven persons to work for 18 weeks on the restoration of St. Patricks church.

"I am very pleased to provide this funding to communities on the Great Northern Peninsula," Minister Byrne said. "It is important that we build up our community infrastructure in order to effectively stimulate economic development for the area. The funding for these projects will contribute to the areas overall potential."

"These projects have the dual benefit of enhancing economic opportunities, improving local tourism infrastructure as well as providing assistance to individuals which will help them in their efforts to secure ongoing employment," said Minister Kelly.

The projects are being supported under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement, through funding provided by the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program component. JCPs brings together local partners to create employment opportunities by linking the needs of unemployed individuals with local business initiatives and economic development. To be eligible, companies must demonstrate that the work experience provided to unemployed individuals is incremental to their normal operations and can lead to long-term employment as well as help communities build their economies.

Job Creation Partnerships is one of the Employment Benefits and Support Measures (EBSMs) offered under the Canada - Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA). The Government of Canada and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador have established partnerships to help unemployed workers reintegrate back into the labour market. The measures are funded, in whole or in part, by the Government of Canada from the Employment Insurance (EI) account. To be eligible, participants must have established a claim for EI benefits; or have had their EI benefit period ended within the last three years; or have established a claim for EI maternity or parental benefits within the past five years and are re-entering the labour force after having left it to care for newborn or newly-adopted children. Other criteria may apply.
