Minister welcomes guidance counselors from New York and area

Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, today welcomed 11 guidance counselors from New York and area who arrived in the province yesterday as part of the Atlantic Canadian Universities Tour 2002. During their visit to Newfoundland and Labrador, the guidance counselors will tour the Memorial University of Newfoundland, including the St. John's campus, Marine Institute, and a virtual tour of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

"I am extremely pleased to welcome these guidance counselors to our province during their tour of Atlantic Canadian Universities," said Minister Kelly. "We are extremely proud of the high-level of post-secondary education we offer in Newfoundland and Labrador. The primary goal of our international recruitment strategy is to promote economic growth and cultural diversity through the marketing of Newfoundland and Labrador's considerable education expertise."

The Atlantic Canadian Universities Tour comes as a result of a Team Canada Atlantic trade mission to New York City in May 2002. The Canadian Embassy, in partnership with the Atlantic Canadian provinces, organized the tour to help promote Atlantic Canadian universities and the opportunities presented to American students for post-secondary study. The trip to Newfoundland and Labrador was made possible in part by funding provided by the Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement (CEDA) and by Memorial University of Newfoundland and is part of the province's international Education Strategy.

Following their visit to Newfoundland and Labrador, the guidance counselors will tour universities in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

The Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial economic development efforts. It is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
