"Thanks to the combined efforts of the Government of Canada and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, these projects will help provide employment opportunities in about a dozen communities throughout my constituency," said Mr. Efford. "The jobs created will contribute towards improving local facilities in a variety of areas involving recreation, tourism and transportation."

"These projects have the dual benefit of improving community infrastructure as well as helping participants to build on their skills as a means of securing employment," said Minister Kelly. "Those involved will come away better prepared to compete in the labour market and residents will benefit overall from better recreation facilities and improved tourism."

The above-noted projects are being supported under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement, through funding provided by the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) component. JCPs brings together local partners to create employment opportunities by linking the needs of unemployed individuals with local business initiatives and economic development. To be eligible, companies must demonstrate that the work experience provided to unemployed individuals is incremental to their normal operations and can lead to long-term employment as well as help communities build their economies.

The measures are funded, in whole or in part, by the Government of Canada from the Employment Insurance (EI) account. To be eligible, participants must have established a claim for EI benefits; or have had their EI benefit period ended within the last three years; or have established a claim for EI maternity or parental benefits within the past five years and are re-entering the labour force after having left it to care for newborn or newly-adopted children. Other criteria may apply.
