Minister introduces new Tutoring /Work Experience Program

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, today announced a new Tutoring/Work Experience Program that will allow university students to earn towards the cost of their education while at the same time receiving meaningful work experiences that are related to their field of study.

"This program was developed in consultation with all 11 school boards in the province and under the direction of a Provincial Advisory Committee comprised of representatives from the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, Department of Education, school boards and the NLTA," said Minister Kelly. "Everyone agrees that the new program will complement our very successful Tutoring for Tuition program where high school students tutor those in need of academic assistance."

The Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education has allocated $300,000 from the Student Investment Opportunities Corporation in support of this program, which is expected to get under way in late April, or early May, after students have finished their post-secondary studies.

Under the program, post-secondary students will provide tutoring, in their home towns, to high school students who are preparing for public exams in exchange for tuition vouchers and a weekly stipend. Post-secondary students who are interested in obtaining work in this new program are advised to contact their former high school.

"This program will be of significant benefit to the young people of our province, especially to those pursuing careers in the education field," said Minister Kelly. "It stands as a further example of the commitment of this government to the needs and future of youth in our province."
