Premier to host annual tree lighting ceremony

Premier Roger Grimes will host the 16th annual Christmas Lights Across Canada Ceremony on Thursday, December 5. The premier will be joined at the event by Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett.

The celebration will be held on the front steps of the Confederation Building, East Block at approximately 6:15 p.m. At approximately 6:45 p.m. the Premier will illuminate approximately 60,000 lights at the Confederation Building and along the Prince Philip Parkway. This event is being held in conjunction with similar tree lighting ceremonies taking place in Ottawa and other provincial and territorial capitals.

"The Christmas Lights Across Canada ceremony is about sharing the holiday spirit and celebrating together, as Canadians, a season which places the emphasis on family values and community spirit," said Premier Grimes. "I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians an enjoyable and memorable holiday season."

Local performer Sheila Williams will be the master of ceremonies for the event, and entertainment will be provided by Vanier Elementary School Choir and the Salvation Army St. John�s Citadel Band. Refreshments will be served after the tree lighting.
