Ministers welcome appointments to Marine Atlantic board

The provinces transportation and tourism ministers welcomed news that five residents of Newfoundland and Labrador have been appointed to the Board of Directors of Marine Atlantic.

Late last week federal Transport Minister David Collenette announced Peggy Ann Coady, Robert Hicks, Beverly Marks, Donald Warr and Clyde Way had been appointed to the board.

"Marine Atlantic exists to provide service to this province. That is why, for years, we have been saying more people from Newfoundland and Labrador should hold positions on the board," said Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett. "Were glad the federal minister has finally paid heed to that advice and acted accordingly. We congratulate these five individuals on their appointments and have every confidence they will represent the provinces interests well."

"This province is once again boasting an extremely successful tourism season. Non-resident automobile visits are up 15 per cent this year, and Marine Atlantic traffic is up 13 per cent. I am pleased that the Newfoundland and Labrador perspective will be adequately represented through these appointments to the board. I congratulate the new board members," said Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation Julie Bettney.
