The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school boys volleyball championships scheduled this weekend

Two high school provincial team volleyball champions will be crowned this coming weekend, as 18 teams compete at Harbour Breton and St. John�s.

The Provincial Boys 2A will be held with the Girls 2A at Eric G. Lambert School, Churchill Falls on December 6 and 7. The representative for the island portion were determined last weekend and Lumsden School Complex teams were successful in winning both the boys 2A and girls 2A events.

King Academy in Harbour Breton is the host school for the Boys 3A Championships. Ten teams will compete in a two division format. Division A will play out of St. Joseph�s gym and will consist of Glovertown Academy, Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Holy Cross High (St. Alban�s), Baie Verte High and Roncalli High (Port Saunders). Division B consists of Smallwood Academy (Gambo), Menihek High (Labrador City), King Academy, Southwest Arm Academy (Little Heart�s Ease) and Piccadilly Central High. Division B will play out of the King Academy gym. Games in both divisions get underway at 10 a.m., Thursday, and continue throughout the day. The last round robin games will be played Saturday morning followed by the semi-finals and championship game.

Booth Memorial in St. John�s will host the 4A Boys Provincial Championships. Eight teams will compete for the title in this event. Division A will consist of Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), the host Booth Memorial, Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) and Holy Spirit (Manuels). Facing off in Division B will be Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Clarenville High, Gander Collegiate and Roncalli High (Avondale). The opening ceremonies are set for 1:15 p.m. at Booth Memorial. Matches start at 2 p.m. at both Booth Memorial and Bishop�s College schools. The final four round robin games will be played Saturday morning. The semi-finals are scheduled for 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday followed by the championship match at 3:00 p.m.

All teams involved will be competing for gold and silver medals and the championship banner. As well, the team sportsmanship award will be awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
