Provincial high school island girls and boys 2A volleyball
championships scheduled this weekend

The first of the high school provincial volleyball championships get underway this coming weekend. The Island 2A Girls and Boys tournaments will be held to determine the island representative to the provincial event to be held in Churchill Falls, December 6 and 7. Teams from Labrador schools will compete against the island representatives for the provincial title.

The boys 2A island tournament will take place in St. Bernards and Rushoon on the Burin Peninsula. Fortune Bay Academy and Christ the King schools will co-host the event. A total of nine teams will be competing to qualify for the provincial tournament. Division A will play matches out of Fortune Bay Academy and will include Lumsden School Complex, Fortune Bay Academy, Mountain Field Academy (Forteau) and Fitzgerald Academy (English Hr. West.) The following five teams will compete in round robin play in Division B hosted by Christ the King School - Random Island Academy, Bonne Bay Academy, Christ the King School, Main River Academy (Sops Arm), and Gill Memorial (Musgrave Harbour)

Matches get underway 10:00 a.m. on Friday and continue throughout the day. The top two teams from each division will meet in playoff action starting 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with the cross over games followed by a bronze medal game and the championship match.

Gill Memorial Academy and Lumsden School Complex will co-host the girls 2A island volleyball championship this coming weekend in Musgrave Harbour and Lumsden. Eight teams will compete in a two division double round robin format for the right to travel to Labrador in early December. Games get underway at both Gill Memorial and Lumsden School at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Competing in Division A will be Gill Memorial Academy, Our Lady of Labrador (West St. Modeste), Lakeview Academy (Buchans) and Random Island Academy. Teams playing in Division B, playing out of Lumsden School, include Mountain Field Academy, Main River Academy, St. Joseph�s (Lamaline) and Lumsden School Complex.

The double round robin portion of the tournament concludes Saturday morning. Immediately following, the top two teams from each division will meet in the cross over games followed by the championship match. All playoff games and the championship will be played at Gill Memorial.

All teams involved with the island tournaments will be competing for the team sportsmanship banner, as well as gold and silver medals. The team sportsmanship banner is awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
