The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial high school cross country running tournament scheduled this weekend

The high school Provincial Cross Country Running Championships will take place this coming Saturday. Roncalli High in Port Saunders is the host school for the event. In addition to the host school, more than 20 schools will be competing in this event.

The competition will consist of both a team and individual component in four divisions. Champions will be crowned in senior boys, senior girls, junior girls, junior boys, team and individual. Qualification meets have been held. The winning five member team has qualified for the provincial championship. In addition, any athlete not on the winning team, but placing in the top three in their qualification race has the opportunity to run as an individual runner and compete for the individual crown.

The senior boys will run a 5,000 metre course. Teams competing will include Menihek High, (Labrador City) Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Baltimore High (Ferryland), Indian River High (Springdale), St. Lawrence Academy, St. Augustines High (Plum Point), Glovertown Academy and Roncalli High. In addition, athletes from Henry Gordon Academy (Cartwright), Regina High (Corner Brook) and Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island ) will compete in the individual competitions.

The senior girls race will cover a 3,000 metre course, with the following teams vying for the championship banner - Goose High (Happy Valley-Goose Bay), Stephenville High, Baltimore High (Ferryland), Dorset Collegiate, St. Lawrence Academy, St. Augustines, Glovertown Academy and Roncalli High. Individual runners from Baie Verte High, Marystown Central High and Holy Cross (St. Alban�s) will also be competing for individual awards.

The junior boys (15 years and under) will also run the 3,000 metre course. The team event will see competition from Appalachia High (St. George�s), Baltimore High, Cape John Collegiate (La Scie), Pearce Junior High (Burin), St. Augustines High, Glovertown Academy and Roncalli High. Joining in the race for individual honours will be competitors from Templeton Collegiate, (Gillams), Presentation Junior High (Corner Brook), Dorset Collegiate and St. Lawrence Academy.

The final division is the junior girls division (15 years and under). These athletes compete on a 2,000 metre course. Schools competing in the team division include Stephenville High, St. Edwards (Placentia), Baie Verte High, Pearce Junior High, St. Augustines, Roncalli and Holy Cross. Individual runners from Presentation Junior High, St. Peters Academy (Westport), St. Lawrence Academy and Holy Cross will compete.

All teams will be competing for the championship banners. As well, as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
