Provincial high school tournaments scheduled this weekend

Four schools will be crowned provincial champions this coming weekend as the High School Athletic Federation continues with its fall schedule. Two boys soccer and two girls slo-pitch softball tournaments will take place.

Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista is the host school for the 4A Girls Slo-Pitch tournament. Seven teams will gather in Bonavista to decide the 2002 champions. The tournament is set up in a two-division round robin format. Division 1 will see action from the host school - Discovery Collegiate, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap) and Roncalli High from Avondale. Facing off in Division 2 will be Holy Trinity (Torbay), Fogo Island Central High, Marystown Central High and Appalachia High (St. Georges). Games will be played at both Bonavista and Port Union fields. Games start at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Port Union and 12:30 at Bonavista. The round robin finishes on Saturday morning and is followed by cross-over games and the championship game at 2:00 p.m.

St. Joseph�s Academy in Lamaline is the host school for the Girls 3A Slo-Pitch which is also a seven team event. Competing in the Green Division will be the host school St. Joseph�s, Bishop White all Grade (Port Rexton), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie) and St. John Central High (Burgeo). In the White Division, Christ the King School (Rushoon), Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Roncalli High (Port Saunders) will compete for the cross-over positions. All games will be played at the Port May Field starting 10:00 a.m. Friday, and continuing throughout Friday and Saturday. The championship game will be played at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

The boys take to the soccer pitch this weekend in two provincial tournaments. The boys 4A soccer is being hosted jointly by St. Lawrence Academy and Marystown Central High. Six teams have advanced through qualification tournaments to vie for the championship banner. Division A hosted by St. Lawrence Academy will also include Bishops College, (St. John�s) and Stephenville High. Division B, played out of Marystown will also include Gonzaga High (St. John�s) and Holy Spirit (Manuels). Round robin games will be played at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m. on Friday with cross overs 9:30 Saturday morning and the championship game set for 1:30, Saturday afternoon.

Carbonear Collegiate will play host to five other 3A boys soccer teams from across the island. Two divisions of three will compete for the top two placings and qualification in the cross overs. Division A will play out of the Harbour Grace field and will see action from Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and Mobile High School. The Carbonear Field will be the site of the Division 15 games featuring Indian River High (Springdale), Templeton Collegiate (Gillams) and Carbonear Collegiate. Games will be played at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The semi-finals are set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday with the winner decided in the 2:00 p.m. championship game.

All teams will be competing for the championship banner as well as the team sportsmanship banner. The Team Sportsmanship Banner is awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
