Provincial high school tournaments start this weekend

The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation kicks off the 2002-03 season this coming weekend with three provincial championships scheduled. Champions will be decided in 3A and 4A Girls Soccer and 4A Boys Slo-Pitch.

O�Donel High in Mount Pearl is the host school for the Girls 4A Soccer tournament. Six teams will compete in a two division tournament for top honours. Division A will see action from Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), Gonzaga High School (St. John�s) and Stephenville High. Division B action will include games between the host, O�Donel High, Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s) and Marystown Central High.

The opening ceremonies will be held at the O�Donel Gymnasium 8:30 Friday morning. Games are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday at both the Central Field and the Middle Smallwood Field. Cross overs, with the top two teams from each division will be played 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The championship game will be played 1:00 p.m at the Smallwood Field.

St. Lawrence Academy will play host for the six team 3A Girls Soccer tournament. Games will be played at the two St. Lawrence fields scheduled for Friday at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The teams competing in Division A include the host St. Lawrence Academy, Gander Collegiate and Templeton Collegiate (Gillams). Competing for the playoff spots in Division B will be Mobile Central High, Holy Name of Mary (Lawn) and Indian River High (Springdale). The cross over games will be played 9:30 a.m. Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. championship game.

The boys take to the field this weekend as well with the 4A Boys Slo-Pitch Championships set to go in Foxtrap, hosted by Queen Elizabeth Regional High. Eight teams will compete in a two division round robin for the right to advance to the playoff round. Division A will play its games at Parsons Field, Seal Cove, and will consist of the host, Queen Elizabeth, Bishops College (St. John�s), Carbonear Collegiate, and Leo Burke High (Bishop Falls). Nugents Field in Kelligrews is the home field for Division B teams - Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s), Stephenville High, Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista) and Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville).

Round Robin games are scheduled at both locations for Friday at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. All playoff games will take place at Parsons Field and will get underway at 12:30 and 2:00 p.m.. The championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

All teams will be competing for the championship banner as well as the team sportsmanship banner. The team sportsmanship banner is awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the Federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
