Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame appointments

Angela King, president of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of three new individuals to the Board of Governors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. The appointments are for a three-year term and begin immediately. The individuals are:

Gerard Healey of St. John�s. Healey is a former hockey, soccer, and track and field athlete who competed in the St. Bon�s and Brother Rice High School athletic programs.

Terry Mallay of Marystown. Mallay is a former soccer player and coach who has over 36 years of experience as a sport participant and volunteer. Mallay is recreation director with the Town of Marystown.

Linda Babstock Murphy of St. John�s. Murphy is a former athlete with the Memorial University Beothucks and a long time volunteer archivist with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Archives.

King also announced that John McGrath has been reappointed to a second three-year term as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. McGrath is a former president of the Newfoundland Soccer Association and Sport Newfoundland and Labrador.

The board of governors will meet in St. John�s on Friday, September 20, to select individuals who have been nominated for the three categories of membership and enrollment in the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame, namely:- Athlete, Builder, and Athlete/Builder. A maximum of five individuals can be enrolled annually into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.

The other members of the board of governors include Wayne Simon of Stephenville, Roy Oldford of Grand Falls-Windsor, Douglas Moores of Harbour Grace, Joe Wadden of Mount Pearl, Ben Lake, Marge Keough, Jeff Babstock and Dave Spurrell of St. John�s.

The 2002 Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony will take place in St. John�s on Saturday, November 2, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Pleasantville.
