The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

National boys basketball championships

The Newfoundland midget boys team lost a heart breaker to Manitoba at the National Midget Championships, in Lethbridge, Alberta by a score of 90-88 on Monday evening. The half time score was 59-38 in favor of Manitoba. A strong second half performance by the Newfoundland team almost pulled off the stunning comeback. Ronnie Sweeney of Mount Pearl led all scorers with 37 points and 12 rebounds. Mark Woodland of St. John�s chipped in with 13 points.

The juvenile boys fell 99-62 to a strong Alberta team. The half time score was 44-33 in favor of Alberta. Top scorers for Newfoundland were Nick Higgens of St. John�s with 14 points and Andrew Boland of Mount Pearl with 12.

Both teams will see action today as the midgets compete against Alberta and the juvenile team faces a powerful British Columbia team.
