Volleyball Association annual awards finalist
The NLVA Annual General Meeting will take
place in St. John�s at Guv�nors Inn on Saturday June 8 and in
conjunction with the meeting the NLVA will name its annual award winners.
The finalists for each annual award are
listed below.
Reg Soper Memorial Award- Deditation and work

Reg Soper Award- Dedication
and Work in Volleyball
Randy Manning
Randy has played an integral role in the volleyball community this year both
provincially and locally. He was appointed to the position of NLVA
representative for the eastern region; he also organized and coached the
eastern regional teams in 2001 and 2002. Randy has been the NLVA
representative at all events in his area for the 2002 volleyball
championships
Hubert Rowe
Hubert has played an active role in
the volleyball community for many of years. He has been the NLVA
representative for the western region for many years. Hubert also coached
the G. C. Rowe Jr. High girl�s team to the elite ranks.
Deon Goulding
Deon has been a tremendous factor to the development of volleyball across
the province this year. Mr. Goulding is the NLVA Elite Development chair
person; he was the chairperson for volleyball at the Newfoundland and
Labrador Games. Deon was also the NLVA representative and leader for the
2001-2002 regional program trips.
Coach of the Year
Terry Mosher
Terry�s CBS Sabers Girls team has been the team to beat for the last
couple of seasons and just to name a few, this season the team won 4A
championships, won gold at the NLVA Midget +1 Championships, gold at the
Juvenile A Championships, and many more. Terry was named a finalist for the
2002 Sport Newfoundland Coach of the Year. He was awarded the 2002 Coach of
the year in Conception Bay South, and also the 2002 coach of the year for
the NF&LAB High School Athletic Federation.
Bill Thistle
Bill has developed a boys Juvenile A team, which has become competitive
against university level players, a team that made it to the final in every
tournament they entered this season. The Booth Braves has won a gold medal
at the NLVA Beresford Volleyfest, gold at the Subway Classic Invitational,
gold at the Booth Memorial Invitational, silver at 4A High School
Championships, silver at the Juvenile A Boys Championships, Silver at the
Labatt�s Men�s A League Championships. Bill also coached two pre-bantam
girls teams in a number of championships this year, and he dedicated his
time to help coach the 2001 Avalon Regional Boys team.
Bruce Andrews
Bruce has developed the town of Grand Falls-Windsor as a very strong and
successful volleyball community. This season the Exploits Valley High
Midgets have had great success; gold medal in the Senior B Girls Volleyfest
Tournament, gold medal at the Junior High Girls NLVA Provincial, gold medal
at the Juvenile B Girls NLVA Provincial Championship. Bruce�s team also
won the Winter Games Regional Gold medal and went on to win the silver at
the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games. Along with winning all these
championships Bruce is also the NLVA central representative for his region,
and hosted a number of tournaments this season.
Robbie West - Minor Female
Player of the Year
Krista Parsons
Krista is a member of the CBS Sabers team, which has had great success this
season; gold medal 4A Provincials, gold at the 2002 Midget +1 Provincial
Championships, gold medal at the Juvenile A Provincial Championships, gold
medal at the Goodyear/City Tire High School Classic. Krista was also named
all-star at the 2002 NLVA Midget +1 Provincial Tournament. Krista was also a
member of the NLVA Midget Elite Provincial Team the summer of 2001.
Rhiannon Morgan
Rhiannon has had an extremely successful season nationally, provincially,
and locally. Her team CBS Sabers is seen to be the "team to beat"
and Rhiannon plays as a go to person on the team. Rhiannon was selected to
the 2001 Female Canada Games Volleyball team as the youngest player to
participate. She secured a try-out with the 2001 Canadian Women�s Junior
National Program where she was the last of the players to be cut, but was
invited to try again in 2002. Rhiannon was also nominated for the 2002
Athlete of the Year for Conception Bay South. She has won a number of
all-stars of the season, and was a member of this year avalon regional girls
program.
Shalanda Phillips
Shalanda is the starting setter for the CBS Sabers a team that has had
tremendous success this year. Shalanda was selected to the NLVA 2001 Midget
Provincial Program, and also was a member of the 2002 avalon regional
program. This season Shalanda has been selected to be an all-star at 2002
Juvenile A Provincial Championships, 2002 Midget +1 Provincial
Championships, 2001 Ascension Collegiate Pepsi High School Invitational, she
was also nominated 2002 Athlete of the year- Conception Bay South. Shalanda
is also starting her coaching career, she volunteered be a coach at the 2002
Sabres Volleyball Player Skills Camp.
Robbie West Minor Male Player
of the Year
Shane Byrne
Shane has had very successful season in both indoor and outdoor volleyball.
Shane was a member of the 2001 Canada Games Male Beach Volleyball team,
where he and his partner Darren Winters, placed 7th. Shane was only 16 years
of age of the games which means he is eligible to play in the 2005 games in
beach. Shane is also a member of the Goose Bay High School Volleyball team.
Lead by Shane the team had a very successful season; gold medal at the 3A
Regional High School in Lab City, won silver at the 3A High School
Championships in Wesleyville where Shane won the Sportsmanship Award, gold
medal at the Juvenile "A" provincial Championships Shane was named
an all-star.
Adam Gilbert
During the 2001/2002 calendar years, Adam played a prominent role for the
Ascension Collegiate boys team. The team had good success throughout the
season; silver medal at the Keyin College Invitational where he was named an
all-star. The team won a bronze medal at the Midget +1 Provincial
Championship Adam was named as an all-star. He was named an all-star at the
Juvenile A Provincial Championship. Adam was also named MVP for volleyball
at the Ascension Collegiate�s Sports Awards Assembly. Adam was also a
member of the NLVA Midget + Provincial Elite Program last summer where he
was named as an all-star at the Eastern Canadian Championships. Adam has had
a great high school volleyball career.
Justin Ezekiel
Justin is recognized as being one of the top high school volleyballers in
the province. He is the top setter in high school and a great attacker at
any level of volleyball. He has led his team the Booth Braves to numerous
victories over the past two years and the finals to every high school
tournament this year. Justin has been selected an all-star in every high
school competition this season and in some of the senior men�s
tournaments. The Braves competed in the St. John�s Senior Men�s League
for the past three years where Justin was named MVP for division B in 2001
and an all-star for the A division in 2002. The Memorial Men�s Volleyball
Program has been actively recruiting Justin this year and he is planning to
attend Memorial with hopes of a starting role on the Sea- Hawks next season.
Team of the year
Queen Elizabeth/CBS Sabers Girls
This team has had an extremely successful season provincially and locally.
The CBS Girls, coached by Terry Mosher (finalist for Coach of the Year) has
won just about every tournament they entered this season. Gold medal at the
4A Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation Provincial
Championships, gold medal at the Midget +1 Provincial Championships, gold at
the Juvenile A Provincial Championship, gold at the 2001 Ascension
Collegiate Pepsi Invitational Tournament, and gold at the Goodyear/City Tire
High School Classic Invitation Tournament. The team brought home a total of
eight school banners this season. The team was also named a finalist for
Sport Newfoundland and Labrador 2001 Team of the Year. The team has produced
some great athletes, three of whom are nominated for the NLVA 2002 Robbie
West Memorial Award.
Exploits Valley High Midget Girls
This team has also had a very successful year. The EVH Midget Girls coached
by Bruce Andrews (finalist for Coach of the Year) had a season record of 52
wins and 4 loses. The team won a gold medal at the NLVA Beresford Volleyfest
in the Senior B Girls Category, gold medal at the Midget A Provincial
Championship, gold at the Juvenile B Girls Provincial. The team also won
gold at the Winter Games Regional Championship and went on the win silver at
the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.
Booth Memorial Braves Juvenile Boys
Coach Bill Thistle (finalist for Coach of the Year) has development one of
the strongest boys volleyball team in the province. The team made it to the
finals at every tournament that they entered this year. The team won gold at
the NLVA Beresford Volleyfest, gold at the Subway Classic Invitational, gold
at the Booth Memorial Invitational, silver at the 4A High School
Championship, silver at the Juvenile A Provincial Championship. The team
also participated in the St. John�s Senior Labatt Men�s Volleyball
League, where they placed second in the regular season standings and went on
to a second place finish in the Senior A League Championships.
Wayne Sheppard � Senior
Female Player of the Year
Julie Robbins
Julie was a starting middle for the Memorial University Sea Hawks this
season and had a great season. She was named AUS first team all-star; she
was named AUS Player of the Match six times throughout the season, and was
2nd in the AUS League in Blocks. Julie was also named NLVA MVP at the MUN
Athletic Banquet.
Charlene Tilley
Charlene was the Starting Setter for the Sea Hawks this season In her rookie
year, she was named AUS Player of the match three times during the season.
Charlene was awarded the Robbie West Minor Player of the year in 2001 and
was also Queen Elizabeth High School Athlete of the Year in 2001. Charlene
was also invited to a National B Try-out Camp where she had a great showing.
Cheryl Oldford
Former Memorial University standout continued her great performance by
leading her senior team to the NLVA Senior A Championship and along the way
winning the MVP award at the event.
Wayne Sheppard � Senior Male
Player of the Year
Leon Perry
Leon led his team to the 2002 Labatt Senior A Men�s Provincial
Championship this year, and was named MVP of the tournament. He also led his
team to the St. John�s Men�s League championships where he was named an
all-star for his team. Leon was also main organizer for the Labatt St. John�s
Men�s league this year.
Mike Arns
Mike played for the 2001 Canada Games Team and Memorial University Seahawks.
In his first season with the Seahawks, Mike lead his team in most
statistical categories and as well the AUS league as well in blocks, kills,
digs. Mike also lead his senior team to the final in the Provincial Senior
A.
Jamie Benoit
Jamie and his team had a great year. They won Labatt Senior A Men�s
Provincial Championships, where Jamie was named to the all-star team, and
they won the St. John�s Men League where Jamie was named MVP of the
league.
Community Development Award
Jason Lane
Jason has been very active this season, starting with coaching the 2001 and
2002 Girls Eastern Regional Teams. Jason also co-hosted the NLVA Girls
Juvenile A Provincial Championships, hosted a high school provincial
championships, and has coached a numerous teams at his high school with
great success.
Lou Byrne
Lou has brought volleyball back to Happy Valley-Goose Bay. He traveled with
his team to a number of tournaments this year. First to the NLVA Beresford
Volleyfest and and also to the Juvenile A Boys Provincial Championship where
his team won the gold medal. Lou also co-coach a regional team in 2001 and
2002. He was the co-coach for the Midget Plus 1 Provincial Team. Lou also
played a major role in organizing a player and coaching development camp
thought Labrador in April.
Mike Murrin
Mike has coached many of teams over the years with great success, but not
only has Mike developed some great players in Stephenville but also has
developed local referees and Level 1 coaches. Over the past two years Mike
has played a great role in organizing the NLVA regional competition in
Stephenville. He also has coached the western regional team for two years.
Stephenville will now have a volleyball program for years to come thanks to
the dedication Mike Murrin has shown to his community and the sport of
volleyball.
