The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Western regional elite volleyball tryouts

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association (NLVA) is pleased to announce that Paul Hulan and Mike Murrin have been selected to coach the Western Region Elite Girls Volleyball Program. This program is designed so the NLVA can have more athletes training throughout the province leading to the Provincial Team Program.

The regional teams will be comprised of the best athletes from each region born in 1988 1985. Each regional team selection must have athletes at both the older and younger end of this age range to ensure appropriate number of athletes for the Provincial Team Programs. Therefore, the NLVA strongly encourages all athletes in this age range to attend tryouts.

Each regional program will train for a tournament, which all regional teams will attend, on the May 24th long weekend (actual dates are May 17- 20). The girls event will be in Stephenville and boys in St. Johns. From this tournament, on the May 24 th weekend, the athletes would then be selected for the appropriate provincial team midget or midget +1.

All athletes are welcome to attend tryouts. To date we have the following regional team programs operating for boys and girls in Avalon (two programs), Eastern, Central and Labrador.

Western Girls Program tryouts as follows:

Corner Brook -Tryout 1
Friday April 19 - Presentation Junior High
    4:15 6:00 p.m. Session 1
    7:00 8:30 p.m. Session 2

Stephenville - Tryout 2
Sunday April 21 - Stephenville High School
    1:00 3:00 p.m.

Athletes can attend both tryouts (Corner Brook and Stephenville), however to be considered for the regional team they only have to attend one of the tryouts listed above (Corner Brook or Stephenville). The fee will be $20 per person for tryouts regardless of the number of sessions you attend.

Deadline for application to be received via fax to (709) 576-7493 is noon April 18. If interested athletes miss this date they can bring their application and fee to the first session of the tryout camp. Athletes planning to attend the tryout should fax their application in advance, so the NLVA can be prepared for the number of athletes.

Registration forms can be obtained on the NLVA website or by contacting the NLVA office. Checks can be made payable to Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association.

For further information feel free to call Paul Hulan or Mike Murrin at Stephenville High or Craig Neil at (709) 576- 0817 or by email
