Provincial high school hockey championships this weekend

The top high school hockey teams in the province will be on the ice this coming weekend to compete for championship banners in the 3A and 4A Division, as well as the Boyle Trophy in the 4A Division.

The winner of the 4A title will also be awarded the historic Boyle Trophy - the second oldest trophy in North America. The Boyle was first presented in 1904 and, since 1985, it has been awarded to the winner of the 4A High School Championships.

Eight teams will converge on Bay Roberts and Carbonear for the 4A Championships, which should prove to be a very competitive tournament. Playing in Division A out of Bay Roberts will be the host team Ascension Collegiate Astros, as well as Exploits Valley Eagles from Grand Falls who are defending champions; Lewisporte High Lynx; and Bishop�s Barons from St. John�s. Division B will play out of Carbonear and will include the host team Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels; Gonzaga Vikings (St. John�s); Discovery Collegiate Destroyers (Bonavista); and Stephenville Spartans.

The opening ceremonies for the tournament is scheduled for 9:50 a.m. Thursday morning, followed by the first round robin games. Play continues throughout Thursday and Friday. The semi-final games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by the championship game at 2:00 p.m.

Indian River High in Springdale will host the 3A Hockey Championships. Eight teams will be vying for the provincial title in this tournament as well. Division A will include the host team Indian River High: Lester Pearson (Wesleyville); Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony); and Baie Verte High. Division B will see action from Baltimore High (Ferryland); Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island); Elwood Academy (Deer Lake); and King Academy (Harbour Breton).

Divisional round robin games get underway at 9:00 a.m.. Thursday and continue throughout Thursday and Friday. A skills competition is planned for 4:00 p.m.. on Friday. The top teams from each division will advance to the semi-finals at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with the winners meeting in the championship game at 3:00 p.m.

Each winning team will receive the coveted championship banner to be hung in their school. Gold and silver medals will also be presented. As well, as part of the Federation�s Sportsmanship First Program, additional awards will be presented at all federation tournaments. A team sportsmanship banner will be presented to the team best exemplifying the ideals of sportsmanship on and off the ice. In addition, an individual athlete will be presented the Sportsmanship Medal. Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador is the major sponsor of the Sportsmanship First Program. School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland are the major sponsors of the High School Athletic Federation and of the provincial high school hockey tournaments.
