The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

High school federation provincial cross-country skiing this weekend

The Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation will sponsor the High School Cross-Country Skiing Championships in Flowers Cove this coming weekend. Canon Richards High School is the host school for the event that will feature approximately 70 skiers.

Provincial titles will be contested in four divisions for teams, as well as individuals. Banners will be awarded for Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Senior Boys and Senior Girls. The following schools will be vying for top team and individual honors: Menihek High (Labrador City); Regina High (Corner Brook); Presentation Jr. High (Corner Brook); Templeton Collegiate (Gilliams); St. Augustine�s High (Plum Point); Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony); Smallwood Academy (Gambo); Stephenville High/Middle School and Appalachia High (St. Georges).

The meet will consist of individual and relay races. The combined finishes in the individual races will determine the team awarded the championship banner. In the individual races, which will use the freestyle technique, the junior girls race will cover a 2.5 kilometre course, the junior boys and senior girls a 5 kilometre course and senior boys a 7.5 kilometre course. The relay team will consist of the top three finishers from each team from the individual races. The classical style will be used to cover the following distances: .5 kilometres for Junior Girls; 1 kilometre for all other divisions.

All teams will be competing for the championship banner. All federation tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Key Tech.
