Finalists for annual provincial athletic awards

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador today announced the finalists in each of seven categories for the annual provincial athletic awards. Chair of the Annual Awards Program, Rosalind Pound released the names of the finalists and said: "The voting this year was tremendously close. 2001 was a banner year for sport in Newfoundland and Labrador, with significant achievements at Canada Games in London and on other fields as well."

The winners will be announced at the annual awards banquet set for March 9 at Holiday Inn in St. John's. Pound also announced that some tickets for finalists have already been set aside. Each of the finalists should contact the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Office for further details. Other tickets will go on sale on February 15, from the SNL office. Details are available by calling 576-4932. The three finalists for the Junior Female Athlete of the Year are soccer's Katie Arnott, basketball's Michelle Bartlett, and Julia Howard of athletics.

The three finalists for the Senior Female Athlete of the Year are Janine Browne of basketball, Michelle Critch of karate, and triathalete Donna Phelan. Phelan was named Provincial Senior Female Athlete of the Year for 2000.

The three finalists for the Junior Male Athlete of the Year are Mike Arns of volleyball, John Douglas of soccer, and rugby's Robert Wilson. The three finalists for the Senior Male Athlete of the Year are bowling's Terry Blake, basketball's Carl English, and diver Adam Morgan.

The three finalists for the Team of the Year are the Brad Gushue curling rink, the Canada Games boys rugby team, and the Canada Games boys soccer team.

The three finalists for the Executive of the Year are Eric Hiscock of volleyball, soccer's Judi Kelloway, and Ted Thorne of baseball.

The three finalists for the Coach of the Year are Terry Mosher of volleyball, Vince Pickett of soccer, and curling's Jeff Thomas. Nominations for the Provincial Athletic Awards Program are only accepted by recognized provincial sport governing bodies. Voting on the awards is done by sport media and sport volunteers throughout the province.
