High school athletic federation honours this year�s best

The high school athletic federation will honour the top student-athletes, coaches and volunteers this Friday evening at our Annual Awards Banquet at the Battery Hotel in St. John�s.

The Brother G.I. Moore Award, along with scholarships provided by Newfoundland Power and the provincial government are presented to the top male and female student-athletes. Individuals considered for the student-athlete of the year must be graduating students who demonstrate not only superior athletic abilities and keen sportsmanship, but strong academic success as well. The female runner-ups for this award are both from Stephenville High School - Colleen Dwyer and Megan Cooper. The male runners-up are Evan Constantine from Laval High in Placentia, and James Lamond, another Stephenville High School student.

The Female Student Athlete of the Year for 2002 is Jessica Wade from Holy Heart of Mary High in St. John�s. Wade has been heavily involved in sports at her school all throughout high school. She has competed at zone, regional and provincial levels in softball, soccer (captain), volleyball (captain), basketball (captain), badminton, track and field and rowing. In addition, she has been

named school Athlete of the Year on three occasions. Wade is also very involved in many other extra-curricular activities at her school and in the community. She is president of the Student Council at Holy Heart and volunteers with other organizations such as peer tutoring, interact club and athletic events. Wade accomplishes this while undertaking a very vigorous academic workload.

The Male Student Athlete of the Year for 2002 is George Mammen from Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor. Mammen has played both volleyball and basketball at the high school level, but the sport of basketball is where he truly excelled. He is one of the top high school basketball players in the province, and has numerous MVP awards to his credit. He has been a member of a provincial basketball team for the last four years, participating in two eastern Canadian tournaments and two national tournaments. Mannem was named Athlete of the Year for his school. In addition he has given back to sport by coaching elementary school teams.

The Coach of the Year Award is presented to a coach who has enjoyed an exceptional season in high school sports. Two coaches this year are being honoured. Both have had tremendous success over the past number of years. Clarence Sutton of St. Kevin�s, Goulds and Terry Mosher from Queen Elizabeth High, Foxtrap are co-winners of this award for this year. Sutton has been coach of girl�s basketball in St. Kevin�s for numerous years, and has developed a very strong program. This past year his senior girls basketball team has a 43-0 record in the province. They have been gold medalists at the St. Kevin�s Jamboree, St. Kevin�s Invitational, Gonzaga Invitational, Subway Classic, Hall of Fame Cup, St. John�s Regional Metro League Championship and the Provincial 4A Basketball tournament. Their season this past year is equalled by their success during the 2000-2001 season when they finished with a 40-0 record. Sutton has coached many athletes who have a very promising future and who represented the province in national competitions.

The co-winner of the Coach of the Year is Terry Mosher from Queen Elizabeth High of Foxtrap. Mosher has coached volleyball in the CBS area for the last 27 years. The past year in particular he had a remarkable season. On the national/provincial level during 2001-2002, Mosher has a 102-10 win-loss record. His senior girls team repeated as 4A champions this past year, as well as winning gold medals in NLVA Midget, Juvenile and Junior tournaments, Clarenville Subway Classic, Ascension Collegiate Pepsi Invitational, Ascension Keyin Invitational, Volleyfest and Goodyear/City Tire Invitational. He has coached no less than 12 athletes who have been members of provincial teams. He has been honoured for his coaching process by the town of CBS, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador and NLVA. Mosher was the winner of the 2001 High School Coaching Service Award.

Dion Piercey from Tricentia Academy in Arnold�s Cove is the runner-up for this award.

The Coaching Service Award is presented to an individual who has had a successful coaching career for many years. The 2002 winner of this award is Tony Reardon from St. Catherine�s Academy in Salmonier. Reardon will retire from teaching this year after 30 years of teaching and

coaching in our school system. This past year, he coached both cross country running and boys basketball teams at St. Catherine�s. Throughout the years, he has guided five basketball teams to provincial titles (1977, 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1999). Reardon started his teaching and coaching career at Enright Memorial School where he coached boys and girls cross country running and boys and girls basketball. When he moved to St. Catherine�s in 1993, he continued coaching both sports. In addition to his involvement in high school sports, he has been a driving force behind the cadet corps in St. Catherine�s, coaching rifle teams to placings at national competitions.

The runners-up for the Coaching Service Award are Bob Riche from Bishop�s College (St. John�s) and Ken Hunt from Elwood High (Deer Lake).

The Honour Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the federation through many years of service. Bill Hurley, a retired teacher is the winner of this year�s award. Hurley started coaching at Laval High School over 30 years ago. He has been involved in high school sports at an administrative level since the federation�s first AGM in 1970-71. He has coached basketball and softball from the earliest days of the federation until his retirement in 1999-2000. He continued his involvement with the federation, continuing to sit on the provincial executive, a seat he has had since at least 1976. He has served the federation well both as regional director and vice-president. He held the position of VP administration for almost 10 years, contributing enormous hours of work on the Federation Classification System.

Each of the 11 regions in the province recognize an individual for their outstanding contribution to their region. The winners of the 2002 Recognition Awards are as follows:

  • St. John�s Region - Terry Mosher, Queen Elizabeth High, Foxtrap
  • Trinity-Conception - Cy Simmons, Carbonear Collegiate
  • Avalon South - Dennis Condon, Mobile High
  • Avalon West - Whytie Horlick, Vista School Board
  • Burin Peninsula - Joe Strickland, Fortune Bay Academy
  • Central East - Gord Blundon, Gander
  • Central - Ted Mullins, Botwood Collegiate
  • Central West - Paul Drover, Baie Verte High
  • Western - John Basha, Stephenville High
  • St. Barbe-Labrador - Michelle Patey, Cow Head School
  • Northern - Adrian Clarke, Eric G. Lambert School, Churchill Falls

Finally, the School of the Year Awards, sponsored by the School Milk Foundation and Dairy Farmers Association, is presented to a school in each of the four divisions, which have had an outstanding year. The winners of the School of the Year Awards are:

  • "A" - St. Mark�s High, King�s Cove
  • "2A" - St. Catherine�s Academy, Salmonier
  • "3A" - Baie Verte High
  • "4A" - Elwood High, Deer Lake
