The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school badminton championships

The Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation will be sponsoring two provincial badminton tournaments this coming weekend. Team champions will be declared in the 4A and 3A divisions and for each division, individual champions will be declared in boys and girls singles, boys and girls doubles and mixed doubles.

For the first time ever, the high school athletic federation provincial tournament will be held in the northeast of Labrador. J.C. Erhardt Memorial School in Makkovik will host the 3A badminton provincial tournament. The first team encounters get underway at 7 p.m. Thursday and continue throughout the day on Friday. The individual competition gets underway 9 a.m. Saturday. The following teams will be competing in both team and individual events: B.L. Morrison (Postville), Menihek High (Labrador City), Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls), Henry Gordon Academy (Cartwright), Goose High (Happy Valley-Goose Bay) and the host.

Queen Elizabeth Regional High in Foxtrap is the host school for the 4A Provincial Badminton Championships. Seven teams will contest the title in team and individual events. The following teams will be vying for the provincial crown - Queen Elizabeth Regional High, Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Glovertown Academy, Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island) and Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook). Encounters get underway Friday with team events and continue with the individual championships on Saturday.

All teams will be competing for the championship banner as well as the team sportsmanship banner. The team sportsmanship banners are awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the federation tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
