Provincial high school girls basketball championships this weekend

The Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation basketball season will come to a close this coming weekend as four girl championship teams will be declared.

The boys champions were determined this past weekend with Tricentia Academy (Arnold�s Cove) capturing the 2A tournament. In 3A Fatima Academy (St. Bride�s) and in 4A O�Donel High (Mount Pearl) took top honours.

Lakewood Academy in Glenwood will host the A Girls event. Six teams will be vying for the championship banner. Playing in Division A will be St. Mark�s (King�s Cove), D.C. Young (Port Hope Simpson), A.R. Scammell (Change Islands). Division B will see action between Lakewood, Bonne Bay Academy and St. Joseph�s (Bay de Verde). The tournament gets under way 12 noon on Thursday with the round robin finishing up Friday evening. The top team in each division will get a bye and the second and third place teams will play against the third and second place team from the opposite division. The winners will cross over on Saturday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 2:30 Saturday afternoon.

St. John Bosco in St. John�s is the host school for the 2A Girls Basketball Championships. Eight teams will compete for the championship banner. Playing out the gold division will be St. Lawrence Academy, Dunne Memorial (St. Mary�s), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Tricentia Academy (Arnold�s Cove). Competing in the Maroon Division against the host school will be J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Menihek High (Labrador City) and St. Augustines High (Plum Point). The first game of the tournament is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday. The round robin games will continue throughout Thursday and Friday at both St. John Bosco and Gonzaga. The semi-final games will be played 9:30 Saturday morning with the championship game scheduled for 1 o�clock.

Fatima Academy in St. Bride�s will be the host school for the Girls 3A Basketball. Eight teams will compete in two divisions of four. Division A will see action from Fatima Academy, Laval High (Placentia), Goose Bay High and Appalachia High (St. George�s). Competing in Division B will be St. Catherines Academy (Salmonier), Baltimore High (Ferryland), Mobile Central High and Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls).

The tournament starts at 9 a.m. on Thursday and continues throughout Friday. The top teams from each division will meet in playoff action Saturday morning at 9 and 11. The championship game will go ahead at 2 p.m.

The 4A Girls Basketball will be hosted by St. Kevin�s High in the Goulds. Eight teams will be competing in the event. Competing in the White Division will be the host, St. Kevin�s, Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Roncalli High (Avondale), and Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s). The Blue Division will see action from Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Booth Memorial (St. John�s), Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Lewisporte Collegiate.

The tournament gets under way at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday. Round robin games continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The semi-final games will be played at 10 and 12 on Saturday with the championship game scheduled for 3 o�clock.

All teams will be competing for the championship banner as well as the team sportsmanship banner. This will be the first time this award is presented at a high school provincial basketball tournament and it is another of the high-lites of the Sportsmanship First Program. These banners are sponsored by the NBA in conjunction with the Canadian School Sports Federation.

All the federation tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
