High school federation boys basketball this weekend

The Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation will award three boys basketball championship banners this coming weekend. Teams from around the province have been involved in play downs over the last few weeks and have qualified for the provincial championships.

The 2A Boys tournament is being hosted by Dunne Memorial Academy in St. Mary�s. Eight teams will compete in a two division set up with the top two teams from each division advancing to the cross overs. The Blue Division will consist of the defending champion - St. Lawrence Academy, Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Tricentia Academy (Arnold�s Cove) and Holy Cross High (St. Alban�s). The Red Division will see action from the host Dunne Memorial, St. Augustine�s High (Plum Point), Menihek High (Labrador City) and the Central East Representative. The tournament gets under way 12 noon on Thursday and continues throughout Thursday and Friday. The semi-final games are scheduled for 9 and 10:45 Saturday morning with the championship game set for 2 p.m.

Mobile High School is the host school for the 3A Boys Championships. Division A will consist of Fatima Academy (St. Bride�s), Mobile High School, Botwood High School and Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls). Playing in Division B will be Baltimore High School (Ferryland), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Piccadilly High and Baie Verte High. All games will be played at Mobile High School starting 9 a.m. Thursday and continuing through to 4:30 on Friday with round robin play. The top four teams will face off on Saturday morning at 9 and 10:30 with the two winning teams from these match-ups playing in the 2 p.m. championship game.

Bishop�s College in St. John�s will be the host school for the 4A Boys tournament. Nine teams will be vying for the title. In Division A O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Laval High (Placentia) will be competing for top honours. Squaring off in Division B will be Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), St. Catherine�s (Salmonier), Marystown High School, Bishop�s College and Stella Maris High (Trepassey).

Games will be played at Bishop�s College and O�Donel High gyms and will get under way 1 p.m. on Thursday. The top two teams from each division play off at 12 noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday followed by the championship game at 5 p.m.

All teams will be competing for the championship banner as well as the team sportsmanship banner. This will be the first time this award is presented at a provincial basketball championship and it is another of the hi-lites of the Sportsmanship First Program. These banners are sponsored by the NBA in conjunction with the Canadian School Sports Federation.

All the federation tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
