Provincial Inland Fish and Wildlife Division and Canadian Wildlife Service
sponsors non-toxic shot workshops

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced that the provincial Inland Fish and Wildlife Division in cooperation with the Canadian Wildlife Service, a division of Environment Canada, are sponsoring a series of non-toxic shot workshops in set locations on the island and in southern Labrador.

"These workshops are designed to assist waterfowl hunters and the general public to learn more about the use of non-toxic shot ammunition for hunting migratory game birds in our province," said Minister Bettney.

The requirements to use non-toxic shot for hunting migratory game birds has been a mandatory federal regulation since 1999 and is applicable in all areas of Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador. "Similar to other hunter awareness programs that we support, like the Firearm Safety/Hunter Education Course, this is an excellent opportunity for waterfowl hunters in our province to gain some additional knowledge in this area," said Minister Bettney.

Workshop locations currently scheduled include:

West St. Modeste, Labrador - October 26, 2002
Springdale, Newfoundland - November 16, 2002
Port aux Basques, Newfoundland - November 30, 2002
St. Brides, Newfoundland - December 7, 2002
