Firearm Safety / Hunter Education Courses Available

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, has announced that Firearm Safety/Hunter Education courses are available at College of the North Atlantic campuses throughout the province.

New hunters must complete the Firearm Safety/Hunter Education Course in order to hunt game with a firearm. Existing qualified hunters who wish to obtain a federal firearms licence, should note that a component of the Firearm Safety/Hunter Education program, Part A - Firearm Safety, is required by the federal government in order to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence. The deadline for completing the Firearm Safety/Hunter Education Course for new hunters wishing to enter the 2003 big game licence draw is November 30, 2002.

"The deadline is necessary in order to prepare for the mailing of big game licence applications for the 2003 draw for moose and caribou on the island and for moose only in Labrador," said Minister Bettney. "This course is an excellent opportunity for new hunters to learn the proper safety skills and for experienced hunters to hone their skills."

People who complete the course after December 2002 will be eligible for the 2004 big game licence draw. Interested persons should contact their nearest College of the North Atlantic campus to register for a course.
