Tenders called for work on Commissariat House

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and Percy Barrett, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, announced that tenders will be called for building repairs on Commissariat House, Provincial Historic Site.

"Commissariat House is an important structure in this provinces military history," said Minister Bettney. "This provincial historic site is one of the oldest wooden structures remaining in the province having been built between 1818-1820. The repair work which needs to be carried out on Commissariat House will ensure that this structure is kept in good condition and reinforces that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to our built heritage."

The scope of work will include repairs to the main roof structure, restoration of chimney masonry, repairs to porch roofing and some associated interior repairs.

"Were pleased to be able to go ahead with this work, as it will help preserve the exterior and structural integrity of the building," said Minister Barrett. "We will call the tender October 2 and are planning to have the work completed this fall."

Commissariat House was restored to the 1830s period during the 1970s as a federal-provincial project. During the 1830s, it was used as a home and office for the Commissariat Department, a branch of the British military responsible for clothing, housing and feeding the men of the British army stationed in Newfoundland. Following the withdrawal of British troops in 1870, the house was used as a rectory for St. Thomas Church. It was also used as both a childrens hospital and old age home. Costumed interpreters take visitors through the reconstructed house as well as the interpretation centre located in the rebuilt stable to explore what commercial, social and domestic life was like in 19th century St. Johns.
