Young artists invited to participate in national program

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today government is looking for young artists to accompany Team Newfoundland and Labrador to the 2003 Canada Winter Games taking place in New Brunswick from February 22 to March 8, 2003. Young artists from each province and territory will come together to create works of art individually and collaboratively using the Canada Games as the inspiration for their art.

"This intense two-week internship is an excellent resume-building activity for young artists," said Minister Bettney. "It provides emerging artists an opportunity to work under an established artist in their fields. The National Artists Program is one of the few programs in this country which directly encourages emerging artists to consider the arts as a career choice."

The National Artists Program was first introduced when Corner Brook hosted the 1999 Winter Games. It was also featured at the 2001 Summer Games in London, Ontario. These two sessions proved very successful for both the artists and the host communities. The Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and other major sporting events now also feature a cultural component.

The program is open to artists between the ages of 16 and 23 who do not make a living from their art. Four participants and four alternates will be picked for each of the following categories: dance, music, theatre arts and visual arts. Applicants must send in the appropriate application form for their discipline(s) along with supporting material no later than Friday, October 18, 2002. The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council will select a jury of experts to review the applications. All applicants will be notified by November 27, 2002 whether they have been selected as either a provincial representative or an alternate.

"The National Artists Program is a wonderful complement to the Canada Games and enhances the athletic events," said Minister Bettney. "This cultural component enriches the experience for everyone involved and expands the appeal of Canada Games to a broader audience. I encourage all young artists to apply for this once-in-a-lifetime arts experience."
