Grants awarded under the Athlete Assistance Program

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today that 56 athletes have received funding under the departments Athlete Assistance Program.

"I am very pleased to offer this assistance to 56 athletes, representing 25 sports, from throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This assistance, ranging from $500 to $1500, totals $42,500 this year, and will be extremely beneficial to these amateur athletes in offsetting their costs of training and attending competitions. Government recognizes that these athletes work hard and are dedicated to achieving their goals whether it is at national, international or Canada Games competitions."

The Athlete Assistance Program is designed to provide financial assistance to athletes to help offset costs associated with training and competition. This year, the department received over 150 applications.

The program is open to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are registered with a provincial sport organization recognized by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Eligible athletes must compete, and continue to compete, for Newfoundland and Labrador at Canada Games and other national and regional competitions. Also, athletes must be attending an educational institution on a full-time basis.

"Many of these athletes who received funding have achieved great success at the national and international level," said Minister Aylward. "I would like to wish this years athletes all the best at their competitions."
