Minister announces funds for cultural resources

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today that $ 400,000 has been allocated to the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador to increase their capacity to care for the provinces collections of art, artifacts and documented history.

"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to the documentation, preservation and presentation of our art, artifacts and archival materials relating to 9,000 years of occupation by peoples of the North Atlantic," said Minister Aylward. "This collection is an immense cultural resource of social and economic importance to our present and future generations."

The province is the custodian of over two million cultural objects from eight distinct cultural groups that have occupied and settled this landscape, from the Maritime Archaic Indians, through to the Dorset Eskimos, the Beothuck and todays Inuit and Innu Peoples and European descendants.

"All three institutions will continue their work on the conservation and protection of these irreplaceable cultural resources," said Minister Aylward. "These collections are significant components to the history, heritage and culture of this province, Canada and the world. The cultural objects require professional standards of care and attention to ensure their viability as a comprehensive basis of knowledge and a source of cultural appreciation for our future."
